It was with great excitement that I got set for my work ... one bright summer day way back in 1999... because, after an early finish at work, I planned to get to the Kanteerava Stadium in Bangalore to try my first bungee jump! It was the first time that Bungee Jumping came into India (Organised in collaboration with Ozone) and the excitement was palpable everywhere...
When i did get to the jump spot, i wasn't surprised to see that there were scores of people gathered, some just awe-struck on-lookers, many like myself waiting to test their mettle and resolve to jump off the 100 mts jump station which was actually a very tall crane and one had to climb endless steps to reach the top. The damn thing swayed with the wind... it was an errie experience...
I paid up Rs. 500 and stood to wait my turn, while watching the other jumpers. There were many who lost their nerve... at the last stick-your-toe-out moment. The organisers had to have immence patience, since, despite the run down one gets before the jump, the actual spot where you stand with your toes sticking out and should take off into the air can be a trying experience for many. many just stood there , mentally preparing themselves... sometimes unsuccessfully.. and there were some who went back in the line and came back with a renewed resolve to jump... and maybe did!
I got my turn and climbed up the iron rail steps... reached the over-hanging crane extention, at the end of which was the jump spot. I remember pinning my t-shirt and pants together after many a funny sights of shirts and tops blooming on to cover the jumpers face when they were hanging upside down... it was a laughter riot. I was all set and thought myself pretty brave. Then they fixed my cord, did their basic safety check, and asked me to walk up (rather scuttle up, since both your legs were tied) to the last meter of the jump bridge. The jump master was a foreigner... I think a french guy, whose name I fail to remember. He asked me with a beaming smile "are you ready, my dear?" And I nodded a yes. He asked me to stick my toes out into the air out of the jump bridge.. such that you are standing on the slot but pretty much can't see anything but the wide expance of air and crowd below you will jump into. He said, "Look at the Vidhana Soudha," in a clipped accent "and Jump. Remember to enjoy the jump!!"
I admit the toe sticking thing did steal a heartbeat or two and with a thumping heart I jumped!! and screamed... but smiled and smiled and posed for the camera and really did enjoy the jump and kept bouncing away like a yoyo for sometime... till I was lowered into the trampoline and was unfettered.Well it sure was something to remember and a great experience
